A soon-to-be-wed couple met their untimely end when they accidentally drove into a 60-meter deep ravine in Terengganu on 5 December.

Hassan Shazali, a 52-year-old school teacher, and Suzaimah Che Azis, a 34-year-old canteen worker at the same school, were set to be married on 25 December. The pair were on their way to Gua Musang, Kelantan, after finishing up their wedding preparations in Terengganu.

The incident occurred on kilometer 52 of Jalan Kuala Jeneris – Sungai Gawi-Aring (Bukit Kawah), as reported by Bernama.

Hulu Terengganu district police chief Supt Sharudin Abdul Wahab said: “Based on preliminary investigations, the accident is believed to have happened when the victims, travelling from Hulu Terengganu to Gua Musang, entered a stretch of road that was closed during a landslide, causing the vehicle to skid and plunge into a ravine”.

“The impact threw both victims out of the vehicle, and they were pronounced dead at the scene,” he added.

Accident believed to have been caused by negligence and irresponsible parties

According to Sharudin, investigations showed that no brake marks were found at the scene.

“Investigations at the scene also found that the vehicle was not travelling at high speed, based on the debris found.

“Usually, if a vehicle is driven at high speed, it would skid before going over. But based on the debris found on the slope, we believe the vehicle was not moving fast and had continued straight into the ravine.

“We believe the accident was caused by negligence, with the driver not paying full attention while driving,” Sharudin said.

He added that police will be monitoring the site and would take legal action against any who are found removing the warning and safety signs found there.

According to him, authorities had placed several warning signs and concrete barriers at the site, but they were removed by irresponsible parties.

Public reminder to obey road closure signs at the affected road

Terengganu Infrastructure, Utility, and Rural Development exco Datuk Hanafiah Mat reminded road users to use the alternative road set by authorities to avoid a similar accident from repeating, Sinar Harian reported.

“The safety of the people is a priority and risky actions must be avoided.

“We also hope that the community will cooperate with authorities until the infrastucure restoration project is initiated and completed within the stipulated time period,” he said.

The affected road was fully closed due to a landslide that occurred following heavy rain during the monsoon season in November last year.
