Three men were shot dead by police in Durian Tunggal, Melaka, on 24 November this year.
It was reported initially that they were members of the Durian Tunggal Gang, and were on their way to commit a robbery at a palm oil plantation in the area until they came across a team of police personnel carrying out an operation (Ops Casa Melaka) there.
A Bernama report said that one of the suspects had slashed a police corporal at the plantation, which happened around 4.30am that morning.
Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said in a media conference: “When police tried to apprehend them, one of them acted aggressively by slashing one of the policemen with a machete, injuring him on his left arm.”
He then said that the police officers had no choice but to open fire on the suspects in self-defence.
According to Dzulkhairi, the Durian Tunggal Gang’s modus operandi was to park their vehicle in the plantation before before walking to the premises to rob the premises such as houses, shops and factories.
“The 29-year old suspect had 39 crime- and drug-related records while the 24-year-old had 12 previous cases which were also related to crime and drugs,” he said.
Victims’ families and lawyers claim the trio were killed “execution style” based on audio evidence.
Lawyers representing the three men’s families are demanding Bukit Aman to investigate their deaths after claiming that they were killed “execution style” based on audio and forensic evidence.
The three men were M Puspanathan, 21, T Poovaneswaran, 24, and G Logeswaran, 29.
In a press conference on 3 December, the families’ legal team presented a 13-minute audio recording that captured the incident, which they claimed contradicted the police’s narrative
Damning evidence from a phone call recording, which has now been made public, suggests that the three men were unarmed and begging for their lives when the police officers shot them that night.
CEO of Thistlegorm Forensic and audio forensics specialist G Venodthan, who analysed the audio recording, said the men appeared to be restrained and unarmed during the incident, with no audible evidence of a machete attack.
He said only the words “bonnet” and “walkie-talkie” were heard, with no mention of the weapons police claimed to have recovered.
Logeswaran’s wife said in the press conference that her husband had called her at around 1.15am while he was driving from Melaka to Kuala Lumpur with a friend of his. He called her to tell her that he was being tailed by another car.
The phone call was not ended when the men were stopped by the police officers, and she recorded the entire ordeal on audio.
Meanwhile, lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan said the forensic findings and post-mortem reports show downward bullet angles that point to an “execution style” killing.
“It’s very obvious that all of them must have been kneeling down. This must have been an execution-style killing. That is the only way it would make sense that a bullet travelled top-down from the nose and lodged in the heart,” he said.
The families’ legal team, which included attorneys Rajesh, Sachpreetraj Singh Sohanpal, and Arun Dorasamy, insisted that Bukit Aman look into the murder case under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
They also called for Melaka police to hand off the investigation to Bukit Aman and for the immediate suspension of all involved officers, including those who were allegedly responsible for inventing the story of self-defense.
Additionally, they called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to call an urgent Cabinet meeting and think about creating a royal commission of inquiry or independent commission to look into any police misconduct, Free Malaysia Today reported.
“Wrongdoers cannot investigate wrongdoers. That does not make sense. The wrongdoers must be investigated by a higher authority,” said Rajesh.

Malaysian Bar calls for urgent inquiry into the shooting incident
The Malaysian Bar has called for authorities to launch an immediate investigation into the fatal police shooting, warning that public trust will erode unless the case is handled with transparency and accountability.
Its president Datuk Mohamad Ezri Abdul Wahab said the conflicting accounts demanded urgent scrutiny by an independent body, Malay Mail reported.
According to a police statement dated 3 December 2025, an investigation has been taken over by a special team from the Criminal Investigation Department in Bukit Aman.
