Controversial blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin aka RPK died last night in the United Kingdom at the age of 74.

His brother, Raja Idris, confirmed his brother passed away at 11.26pm UK time on Monday (9 September) in Manchester.

Malaysia Today reported RPK’s death was due to a blood infection that spread to his lungs and later to his liver.

RPK was born on 27 September 1950 and launched the website Malaysia Today in 2004, which published commentary and articles on Malaysian politics.

His sharp criticism of political elites and the government earned him the ire of many politicians.

One of his notable exposé was about former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, regarding the killing of Altantuya Shaariibu.

This caused RPK to be arrested under the Internal Security Act (ISA) without trial in September 2008.

RPK was freed on 7 November 2008 when the Shah Alam High Court ruled his detention illegal.

He then decided to flee the country and sought asylum in the UK in 2009. RPK has been living in Manchester for several years and continued expressing his views on his blog.
