Anyone planning to enjoy the Langkawi seaside over the next few days must postpone their plans for a while longer.
Due to unpredictable weather, the authorities have advised people to halt recreational activities at Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah for the next four days.
District Civil Defence Force officer Ahmad Shahfikri Darus said red flags have been put up at the two popular beaches to warn people about the heightened risks, New Straits Times reported.
He said the flag will remain there until it’s deemed safe to hold recreational activities.
As of 9am today, both areas recorded a high tide of 3.1m and wind speeds of 42 kilometres per hour, which could cause large waves.
Shahfikri advised the public to immediately inform the authorities if they have an emergency.
This morning’s heavy rain caused the water level at Sungai Melaka at Padang Matsirat to rise to 3.1m.
Meanwhile, Sungai Melaka at Bukit Kemboja and Sungai Kuah are still at normal levels (5.39m and 1.18m respectively), but show an increasing trend due to continuous rainfall.
Weather warning in Northern states
MetMalaysia also announced a weather warning for the northern states in the peninsular.
In a statement, MetMalaysia said the northern states are expected to experience strong westerly winds until 5 July.
The condition may cause thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds in the affected states.
Thunderstorms with heavy rain and strong winds may occur in Kelantan and Terengganu from the afternoon until early evening.
Strong winds and rough seas are also expected along the Phuket waters and the northern Straits of Melaka.
The public is advised to visit www.met.gov.my and MetMalaysia’s official social media pages or MyCuaca app for up-to-date and verified information.
