Tragedy struck for a couple who went hiking at Gunung Lambak when the husband died after falling unconscious at an altitude of 800 metres yesterday morning.

According to Kluang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh, the victim was identified as 50-year-old Tew (Teo) Wei Peng, as reported by Kosmo Online.

According to the victim’s wife Ko Meh Cheng, 50, Tew had complained of chest pain during the hike.

“Early respiratory aid was provided by hospital personnel who were also present by chance near the location where the deceased fainted,” Bahrin said.

However, the victim passed away in the ambulance while being taken to the Enche Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital (HEBHK). The victim was still receiving treatment in the ambulance while on the journey.

According to Bahrin, the incident was classified as sudden death and checks found the victim had no prior health records.

A total of 10 members of the Kluang Fire and Rescue Team, led by Senior Fire Officer II Jusoh Mohd. Salleh, were dispatched to the scene at 9.12am.

Kluang Fire and Rescue Station chief Fauzi Mohd Nor said the victim was safely carried down to the base of Gunung Lambak at around 11am after receiving first aid for breathing.

Hiking precautionary measures

While hiking is a healthy activity, several precautionary measures can be adopted such as having proper rest, taking breakfast, and consuming fluids before a hike, and to bring along drinking water.

It is also advisable to get a doctor’s opinion on one’s fitness level before attempting to hike as exerting yourself too much may bring unwanted consequences.

Pick a hill or trail that you are comfortable with and always wear proper gear. Wearing proper clothes according to the weather is also important.
