Not too long ago, there were reports of two children who died from severe heat stroke. The cases worried many and everyone has been advised to take the necessary precautions to keep safe in the heat.

However, it seemed like the cases have been forgotten quickly because another family has been caught abandoning their children in a hot car while attending a Raya open house.

Facebook user Nana Nandos heard the sounds of fearful cries from a parked car. When she went over to check, she found two girls believed to be twins sitting in the car with the window open slightly.

The car’s engine was off and the doors were locked.

Nana said she managed to calm the children down by giving them a box of drinks while waiting for their parents to return.

After about 30 minutes, the parents and the grandparents returned to the car. Nana said the whole family didn’t give much of a reaction and only smiled. The mother also didn’t seem to notice anything amiss and didn’t feel guilty.

Nana said they were lucky that she didn’t report the matter to the police.

Netizens criticised the parents for leaving their children in the car while knowing that the weather is scorching hot these days. Luckily, nothing untoward happened to the children.

However, a netizen tried to defend the parents by saying maybe the children refused to exit the car once they reached the open house venue.

He said the parents then had no choice but to leave the children in the car when they threw a tantrum and hoped the children will change their minds in a few minutes.

In response, some parents disagreed with the method as it poses a danger to the children. They said they would carry the crying children out of the car and take them along for their safety.

Worse comes to worst, they would wait in the car with their children or not attend the open house.

Some netizens still believe Nana should have reported the matter to the police to teach the family a lesson.

Heavier penalty for negligent parents

In 2020, the government increased the penalty for negligent parents after several cases of children dying in cars because the parents left them behind.

Parents and guardians who are convicted can face a maximum imprisonment of 20 years and an RM50,000 fine. They will also be provided counselling.
