Households with “excessive” power consumption will now no longer enjoy electricity subsidies and will have to pay market rates, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

As reported by Malaysiakini, Anwar said at a press conference after a National Economic Action Council (NEAC):

The (electricity rate) hike is for private residences where consumption is very high, for example, one home using three fans and four air conditioners (at the same time). They must pay the real cost of electricity and no longer enjoy subsidies.

He also noted that this will not affect those who fall under the B40 and M40 bracket as their subsidised rates will be maintained.

This will be done by offsetting the cost onto major factories that are not involved in agriculture or small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

He also added that the government has been on a push to rationalise subsidies to ensure that it is more targeted.

Furthermore, he also noted that NEAC has discussed the creation of a central database aimed at reducing leakages while making sure those who do qualify for subsidies are not left out.
