Months after getting accidentally trapped in a cargo container bound for Malaysia, Md Ratul Islam Fahim drowned in his homeland Bangladesh.

According to Bdnews24, 14-year-old Ratul drowned while bathing alone in a pond near his house at Monohargonj in Cumilla district on Saturday afternoon.

The police are currently investigating the incident. Ratul’s father Faruk Mia said his son was mentally challenged and did not know how to swim.

Ratul, the eldest of three brothers, bathed alone because everyone else was busy harvesting paddy in the field.

On 17 January 2023, Ratul was rescued from inside a shipping container five days after the ship, MV Integra, left Chattogram.

A dock worker heard knocking sounds inside the empty container which prompted government agencies to inspect each of the six containers that arrived at West Port, Klang.

They discovered Ratul in a weak state as he had no food or drinks for days when he was stuck inside the container.

He told the authorities that he fell asleep inside the container while playing with his friends.

After getting medical treatment at Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital, the Bangladesh High Commission in Malaysia facilitated his return home. Ratul flew home on 21 February.
