A baby boy was abandoned outside the Ocean Fresh Seafood factory in Kampung Peramu Tanjung Lumpur, Kuantan, and was found with bites from ‘kerengga’ (weaver ants).

According to Harian Metro, a 52-year-old woman named Mok Ti, who lives nearby, initially heard the cries of a child around 7.30am but brushed it off because she thought it was the neighbour’s child crying.

When the crying hasn’t stopped at 11.30am, Mok Ti decided to check and stumbled upon the abandoned baby near the seafood factory.

She said the baby was placed on a wood plank and the ants bit all over the baby’s body. The baby was found with some blood and the umbilical cord was already cut.

She wrapped the baby with a batik cloth and then called her friend, who works in the factory, for help to inform the police, Kosmo reported.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said the baby was brought to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afan (HTAA) for medical attention. The baby is in stable condition and is currently under observation in the children’s ward.

Police have also gone through the CCTV footage from the factory. Unfortunately, the cameras did not point towards the area where the baby was found.

They believe the baby was born elsewhere but the suspect tried to hide the birth by abandoning the baby near the factory.

The doctor who examined the baby boy said the baby was born about three hours earlier before he was found.

At this time, the police are still gathering information and visiting private clinics in the area to track the suspect.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the police at any nearby police station.

Netizens were sad that the baby was abandoned and hoped the baby will be well-cared for moving forward.

The incident also made netizens think about those who badly want children of their own but face difficulties in conceiving.

Some said the baby should have been left in safer places such as outside a surau or in public baby hatches.

Meanwhile, there were also people who were a little more sympathetic to the mother of the abandoned baby boy. They said there’s a possibility that the mother of the baby boy was a rape victim and may not be able to seek proper help.

No matter what the reasons are, what’s important is to make sure the baby boy grows up well and healthy.

As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child.”
