Four members of a family were found unconscious in a car after the car hit the Bentong toll plaza barrier yesterday (24 April) when the driver fainted. The family was travelling from Tok Bali, Kelantan, to Balakong, Selangor.

In the 2.40pm incident, policemen who were on patrol along the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway during Op Selamat went to the family’s aid while being assisted by highway patrolmen, the public, and highway employees.

The family – 1 man, 1 woman and their two children – were carried out of the car and given first-aid treatment by medical officers. They were then sent to Bentong Hospital for further treatment.

All four have regained consciousness and the doctor’s examination found that the victims had low blood oxygen levels.

District police chief Superintendent Zaiham Mohd Kahar said investigations were still ongoing to determine the cause of the incident.

Meanwhile, everyone is advised to get enough rest before travelling in view of the changing hot and rainy weather.

It’s also advisable to check the levels of carbon monoxide in the car and whether there’s an exhaust leakage, especially in old cars.

In other cases, carbon monoxide poisoning in cars has tragically taken the lives of unsuspecting victims.
