Lina Samuel, who was unable to get consistent cancer treatment after her MyKad was confiscated, died this morning (25 April). She was 65 years old and was suffering from Stage 4 colon cancer.

Activist Agnes Padan told The Borneo Post that Lina passed away in Lawas Hospital around 7am after getting admitted the night before around 10pm.

Her family is preparing to bring the body back to the family home in Long Sebangang, Lawas.

She is survived by two sons and two daughters who are all allegedly stateless.

Earlier this month, Lina made the headlines when it was alleged that her MyKad had been seized by the National Registration Department (NRD) last year. She was there to change her address so she could vote in the 15th general election (GE15).

She has been living without her MyKad since November 2022 and it was a difficult journey for her. Without her MyKad, she was denied medical attention at hospitals and clinics.

Despite help from doctors and nurses who tried to provide the best care they could, she had to miss most of her colon cancer treatments.

At the time, the NRD said Lina is allegedly an Indonesian citizen which was why her MyKad was seized.

Her plight caught the attention of many, including Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) who said the MyKad seizure was unlawful and unconstitutional.

On 13 April, NRD Kuching officers met up with Lina in Lawas. She was then issued a temporary document to ease her travel to Miri to receive her cancer treatment.
