Failure is never necessarily the end of anything, in fact, failure gives you a chance to learn from your mistakes.

However, sometimes failure after failure can get overwhelming for many.

Earlier this week, a 24-year-old man set himself on fire due to exam stress and is now receiving medical treatment in a hospital.

It was reported that the law student was devastated by failing his exams for the third time.

Segamat OCPD Supt Ahmad Zamry Marinsah said an employee at a petrol station, where the incident took place on 17 April, managed to douse the flames with an extinguisher.

However, according to Ahmad Zamry, the man then ran to the middle of the road and sat there.

A lorry missed ramming into him but the car behind it collided with the lorry.

The man was later sent to hospital by ambulance where paramedics confirmed that 70% of his body suffered burns.

Additionally, according to Ahmad Zamry, the case is being investigated under Section 309 of the Penal Code for attempted suicide, which carries a year’s jail, a fine, or both.

This comes after minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said announced the government’s move to abolish the offense of attempted suicide under the Penal Code in hopes of preventing such cases from happening.

The bill — which includes the Penal Code (Amendment) Bill 2023, the Criminal Procedure Code (Amendment) Bill 2023 and the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 2023 — was tabled at the Dewan Rakyat for the first reading on April 4.

The second reading and debate will be done in the next sitting in May.
