Everyone knows that smoking or even using your hand phones at petrol stations are especially dangerous and should be avoided.

Unfortunately, some Malaysians just don’t seem to get the memo.

A viral video posted by Twitter user @MALAYSIAVIRALLL showed a man casually smoking from his car while being parked close to a petrol pump.

The caption of the tweet read:

I don’t want to give a long explanation because if I say something I will end up facing backlash. Let him get embarrassed when he sees this video online.

The person taking the video reverses their car to get the man’s number plate but the man smoking in his car seems unphased.

According to online reports, there are 23 places where smoking is prohibited.

These places include any area of a hospital or clinic, public lifts and toilets and any area of petrol stations.

The “area” of a place mentioned above also includes the surrounding area of the place within its borders, and also includes a distance of 3 meters from any permanent roof connected to the main building, according to AskLegal.

Offenders can be fined up to RM10,000 or be imprisoned for up to 2 years under Regulation 11 of the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004.

Netizens chimed in with many also chiding the person recording the video for using their phone at the petrol pump area which is also against the law.

When you smoke in the gas station area you are indirectly endangering the people in that area. If you think your life can be bought, don’t bring someone else whose life you can’t buy. Don’t cause other people to become victims because of your unwise actions!!

Twitter user @ezzthedon called this act stupid and selfish.

He said:

This is pure stupidity. Selfish behaviour and does not care about the safety of others and the public.I hope the police will take action against this.

When in high risk public areas such as petrol stations, please learn to be considerate of the safety of others as well as yourself.
