Police Arrest Man Who Lit Fireworks At MRR2 Highway

The suspect allegedly lit the fireworks upon the request of a customer at a friend’s premises.

Police arrested a 35-year-old man on 15 April for lighting fireworks on the road along the MRR2 highway.

The suspect, who works as a lorry driver, allegedly lit up the fireworks called Cake (138) due to a customer’s request at his friend’s premises.

Ampang Jaya police chief ACP Mohamad Farouk Bin Eshak said the suspect does not have any prior criminal records and tested negative for illegal substances.

The suspect will be remanded for four days until 19 April. The case is being investigated under Section 6 of the Explosive Substances Act 1957 and Section 3(5) of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for playing with and lighting up fireworks and firecrackers.

Upon conviction, Section 6 carries a seven-year jail term or an RM10,000 fine or both. Meanwhile, Section 3(5) of the Minor Offences Act 1955 carries an imprisonment term of not more than a month or an RM100 fine or both.

Previously, a viral video showed a man lighting fireworks on a busy road on the MRR2 highway.

The man’s irresponsible act was criticised by netizens who believed that he exposed many road users to danger and could have caused a road accident.
