A 65-year-old woman in Sarawak couldn’t access cancer treatments for herself after her MyKad was seized by the Lawas district National Registration Department (NRD) office.

According to Malaysiakini, Lina Samuel’s identification card was seized when she tried to change her address so she could vote in the 15th general election.

Lina, who is from the Lun Bawang group, was told by the officer there that her MyKad was seized based on orders of the “boss.”

She didn’t make a police report or complain to the NRD because she struggles with speaking in Bahasa Malaysia formally.

Lina has been living without her MyKad since November 2022 and it was difficult. She has been denied medical attention at hospitals and clinics. This also meant that she had to miss most of her colon cancer treatments and she fears it’ll worsen her condition.

However, she commended the doctors and nurses who tried to help her out the best they could.

Parti Bangsa Malaysia’s Agnes Padan has been trying to get Lina’s MyKad back from the NRD, but has been unsuccessful.

In another Malaysiakini report, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the NRD found that Lina is allegedly an Indonesian citizen, which was why her MyKad was seized.

The birth certificates of her children allegedly showed that her nationality is Indonesian. An investigation by the NRD apparently confirmed that.

According to the NRD, Lina’s case is currently still under investigation and they’ll meet her soon.

Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof has also reached out to Lina’s daughter to obtain more information about the matter.
