Bersatu leader and Machang MP, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, in a bid to illustrate the state of the people’s finances and how another round of Employees Provident Fund (EPF) withdrawal is needed, resorted to claiming that it reached a point where someone had to sell their kidney.

He said this during a press conference on Monday (3 April) after Perikatan Nasional MPs staged a walkout from the Dewan Rakyat because their demands for a debate on a targeted EPF withdrawal scheme were unsuccessful.

Some netizens were sceptical of the story and have debunked the claim. A Twitter user @tulunsokit, who identified as a nephrologist, said it’s illegal to sell kidneys in Malaysia and there’s no way to do it here.

He added that Malaysia is a signatory to the Declaration of Istanbul on Organ Trafficking and Transplant Tourism that prohibits organ trafficking in any way, form or means.

Another netizen pointed out that Singapore is also one of the signatories of the Istanbul Declaration.

Where did the story come from?

The story about someone selling his kidney for a phone came from a Tiktok user @daddy_keacy. He allegedly made the viral video in a desperate measure to make some quick cash to pay off his outstanding debts.

He has since issued an apology to the Malaysian and Singaporean governments for making the misleading video. The clips allegedly of him travelling to Singapore to sell his kidney were videos recorded when he went for a job interview there.

He urged those who voiced out their intention to sell their kidneys to stop doing that because it’s not the proper thing to do.

He also mentioned that his affiliate link in the viral video didn’t reap any rewards.

I apologize from the tips of my hair to my toes. I hope everyone can forgive me. Salam Alaikum.
