The Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) has confiscated items from stalls without license permits at the Pasar Ramadan (Ramadan bazaar), in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (TAR) and Jalan Masjid.

Netizens shared videos showing a group of DBKL officers carting away food and drinks from these “illegal” stalls at the popular street market.

Displeased stall owners could be seen trying to fight and stop the officers from taking away their stalls.

A man kept shouting as he walked down the street while being surrounded by DBKL officers pushing carts filled with food and drinks.

In another video, a stall owner quickly pushed her cart of “air balang” drinks into a secluded alleyway when she saw a group of DBKL officers making their way through the crowd.

Some people near the stall also rushed to help her push and hide the cart in the alley.

Opinions online regarding DBKL’s actions were split. Most people supported DBKL for seizing stalls without business permits to be fair to those who paid for theirs.

They believe stall owners should do their due diligence to get the permit if they wanted to open a stall.

For some, the stall owners operating without permits could be seen as accepting and making haram profits.

Meanwhile, a netizen said it would have been better if the owners were allowed to sell the items but still be issued a compound fine as a lesson.

By doing this, the netizen believes the food and drinks would not be wasted. The netizen also suggested DBKL provide temporary licenses for these stalls.

Another netizen suggested that these illegal stall owners, known as Rambo sellers, be given a space to conduct business, but they should be closely monitored because they usually mark up their prices.

Back in March 2023, Sinar Harian reported that DBKL rejected 48 Ramadan bazaar site applications because they failed to fulfil the criteria.

Of course when the evaluation is made, we provide criteria. We also look at the past records, whether the location is suitable for bazaar operations or can cause disturbance to the neighborhood and surrounding development.

Kuala Lumpur City Mayor Datuk Seri Mahadi Che Ngah

Kuala Lumpur City Mayor Datuk Seri Mahadi Che Ngah said DBKL also focused on the security aspects and the layout of the business premises so that it’s comfortable for visitors and ensures it doesn’t get too crowded.
