Road accidents making the headlines can send a chill up the spine, especially when there are deaths involved.

Understandably, people get angry after a video showing a bus driver using his smartphone while driving made the rounds online.

In the video, the bus driver leaned on the steering wheel but kept his eyes on his phone instead of watching the road in front of him. It’s believed the bus was on the way to Ipoh from Penang.

Netizens urged someone to report the bus driver to the relevant authorities. They also tagged Transport Minister Anthony Loke and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to raise the alarm.

Based on JPJ’s statement, the driver has been issued a summons, Notis JPJ P22, for using a smartphone while driving the bus which could cause the bus driver to lose his driving license.

Investigations revealed that the bus belongs to a company operating in Butterworth, Penang and the bus driver has 13 previous traffic offences.

JPJ reiterated that driving while using a mobile phone is a serious and dangerous offence that can increase the risk of road accidents and harm bus passengers and other road users.

They remind all drivers and road users to follow the traffic laws and companies to monitor their drivers to ensure they behave ethically on the road.

It’s hoped that a similar incident would not happen again and that the safety of passengers and other road users is prioritised.

JPJ also urged the public to be its “eyes and ears” on the road, stating that they can report any road violations using the MyJPJ app or email aduantrafik@jpj.gov.my.
