Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh has won the Oscar for best actress for her role in the dimension-hopping adventure Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Dressed in a white Dior Couture gown, she reminded everyone that her win tonight is proof that dreams do come true.

For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof that… dream big, and dreams do come true. And ladies, don’t let anybody tell you that you are ever past your prime. Never give up.

She’s the second Asian actor to be nominated in the best actress category. Mumbai-born actor Merle Oberon was the first Asian to be nominated but back then, she passed as white and hid her Asian heritage.

Yeoh is the first Asian woman to win a leading film acting award at the 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG-AFTRA) and the best actress award at the National Board of Review Awards.

She has previously won the 2023 Golden Globe for best actress in a motion picture, musical or comedy.

Her co-star in EEAAO, Ke Huy Quan, also won the Oscars for best-supporting actor in his comeback role 30 years in the making.

My journey started on a boat. I spent a year in a refugee camp. Somehow I ended up on Hollywood’s biggest stage! They say stories like that only happen in the movies; I can’t believe it’s happening to me. This is the American dream! Thank you so much for welcoming me back. I love you. Thank you!

Jamie Lee Curtis, who also starred in EEAAO, also won the Oscars for best supporting actress. It’s her first Oscar nomination in a four-decade acting career. During her acceptance speech, she thanked her late parents Oscar nominees Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh.

According to news reports, A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once has officially become the world’s most-awarded film of all time.

EEAAO leads the 95th Academy Awards with 11 nominations, including Best Director and Best Picture.

The film has been awarded 158 recognitions from major ceremonies and organizations,  surpassing The Lord of The Rings: The Return of the King which received 101 awards.

Earlier today at Pavilion KL

Yeoh’s mother, Datin Janet Yeoh, said “Malaysia Boleh!” while walking the red carpet at the exclusive viewing party of the 95th Academy Awards earlier today at Dadi Cinema in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

Janet’s guest Tan Sri Vincent Tan said everyone should be very proud because it’s the first time the Oscars has an Asian nominee for best actress, The Star reported.

Model Amber Chia, who was also at the event, said she was proud that Michelle Yeoh is the first Malaysian to be nominated at the Oscars.

I can’t wait for the results later. Actually, getting nominated [in the Oscars] we’re already very happy and proud.
