Travellers arriving in KLIA have complained about the long queues and waiting time at the immigration.

The problem is a long-standing one despite Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing calling for a faster process and it happened again last night to the disdain of fellow travellers.

A few travellers claimed they had to wait for up to three hours before they could clear immigration.

With no announcements given, many of them are left confused and wondering why the process goes at a snail-like pace.

Speaking to New Strait Times, a tourist from Jakarta known as Shivani said she spent one and a half hours lining up to get her passport stamped by the immigration officers.

The aerotrain, which was not in operation, exacerbates the matter and causes even more frustration among tired travellers.

The current option for travellers is to use the shuttle bus service to get to and fro the main terminal building to the satellite building, according to Malaysia Airports on Facebook.

A similar situation is seemingly happening in KLIA 2 as well. A Twitter user Theeban (@TheebanVadivel) said people queued for three hours and claimed the officers kept talking to each other.

Travellers are calling for the untenable situation to be resolved. The calls for improvement include reimagining and revamping the Immigration Department and weeding out incompetence in the civil service.

Other suggestions include having more reliable autogates and having sufficient counters open to hasten the checking process.

It was recently announced in Budget 2023 that the government will add 42 border control posts for the police, Immigration, Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) to fortify national borders.

Hopefully, there will also be plans to improve the immigration checking process at airports.
