Earlier today social media was abuzz with several photos of a parade where men were seen dressed like warriors wielding swords.

While they may have looked like warriors heading to battle, it was nothing more than just “cosplay” for a Terengganu PAS Youth gathering.

However, some of the photos went viral without the full information and it led to criticism online.

In an immediate response, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Naim Mokhtar advised Muslims against joining parades that could lead to misinterpretation and cause disharmony.

“I was informed of a youth gathering event that included a parade using symbols that were Islamic,” he said in a statement, adding that the parade led to various perceptions and also worried the community.

In my opinion, the action of such a parade in that manner is unwise and can give a negative perception of Islam and the country. It would be better if the organisers opted to portray the values in Islam that are peaceful in nature and advocate unity and harmony

Dr Naim said it is the responsibility of all quarters to promote peace and harmony in the community. He added that any action that could lead to public restlessness must be avoided.

The Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) is of the opinion that this matter should be handed over to the authorities for investigation and any relevant action, should the organisers are found to be in violation of national security laws.
