A 21-year-old accounting student of Universiti Utara Malaysia, S Vinosiny, allegedly died from electrocution in her hostel in Sintok, Kedah, on 21 May 2022.

Now 9 months later, her family still hasn’t heard any conclusive news regarding the investigation into her death.

The family’s lawyer M Manoharan said they would be filing a civil suit against the university, government, police, and the attorney-general to seek damages for an alleged inquest held without the family’s knowledge, Free Malaysia Today reported.

Vinosiny’s father, R Sivakumar, allegedly received a letter from the Alor Setar Sessions Court dated 1 February 2023 which stated the cause of death was a result of an accident caused by electrocution.

It’s alleged that the conclusion was made after the case was referred to the coroner’s court and the family was not informed about the inquest.

I have never heard of an inquest being carried out and concluded without proper investigation and without calling witnesses. This is shocking and disturbing.

The family had requested the inquest proceeding notes and other related documents, which they would study before proceeding with the lawsuit.

During the Dewan Rakyat meeting today, Klang MP V Ganabatirau asked for an update about the case.

Higher Education Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the police investigation was still ongoing and the ministry has not been updated and as such, he could not comment further.

Manoharan accused Khaled of being naïve and ignorant, questioning how could the police investigation still be ongoing when it seems like the inquest had already been completed.

What do we know so far up til now?

On 21 May 2022, S Vinosiny was found dead in her hostel room. The university was allegedly vague with the details during a call with her father which aroused his suspicions.

It didn’t help when the university issued a gag order on 27 May to ban students from speaking publicly or organising any form of events about Vinosiny’s death as the investigation was ongoing at the time.

The university threatened to take disciplinary action against students who broke the rule. The gag order was criticised by many and was seen as an attempt to silence students.

On 31 May, the university apologised to the family and promised to work with them to uncover the truth of the matter.

Fast forward to February 2023, the family claimed that they didn’t receive conclusive news of the police investigation, only to find out about an inquest that had been already completed without their knowledge.
