People usually make a comment if someone’s child is given a name that’s believed to be more suited to pets.

However, some people were similarly agitated when pets were named after a person’s honorary title.

A group of 15 men lodged a police report against an alleged lawyer named William HS Foo on Facebook for naming his pet dogs Datuk Seri, Datuk Seri Paduka, and Datuk Wira yesterday (13 February), Berita Harian reported.

It’s believed that William uploaded pictures of his dogs and mentioned the dogs’ names on Facebook in October and December last year.

There was also another picture of his dog wearing a headscarf allegedly accompanied by the caption, “My little Malay sibling is at home wearing the tudung.”

The group representative, Muhammad Kamil Abdul Razak, 26, from Sungai Tiram, claimed the man’s action was done with malice.

They also felt naming the dogs with honorary titles was an insult to the royal institution that awarded these titles to selected individuals.

What is the lawyer’s true motive until he disrespects the royal institution and the sensitivities of Muslims? Or is it because there’s someone protecting the lawyer [behind the scenes]?

Group representative Muhammad Kamil Abdul Razak

Muhammad Haikal Mohd Dzul, 26, from Kebun Teh, called for the authorities to take immediate action. He said no apology is needed from the lawyer because his actions were very rude and could cause racial tensions.

Another member of the group, Mohd Fauzan Azman, 35, from Taman Setia Indah, said the community shouldn’t act carelessly and insult any title given by the palace.

Instead, he said everyone needs to protect the country’s sovereignty, constitution, and laws together.

Johor Bahru Selatan police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat confirmed receiving the report from the group and said an investigation will be carried out.

Previously, Malay Mail reported that a non-governmental organisation, Putra Malaysia, lodged a report regarding the same issue early this month.

The titles he gave to his dogs are noble titles awarded by the palace. We respect his career as a lawyer who should know better about the laws of this country, but we are unhappy with his actions.

Putra Malaysia spokesperson Mohd Izzani Mubarak Ibrahim

Dang Wangi police chief ACP Noor Dellhan Yahaya confirmed receiving the report and said the case will be referred to the Bukit Aman Classified Crime Investigation Unit.

At the time of writing, the alleged posts on William’s page seemed to have been taken down.
