Khairy Jamaluddin wants the ‘madness to stop’.

What madness is he talking about?

The former Umno youth chief took to Instagram this morning to voice his displeasure with regard to the party’s division chiefs having stated they supported no contest for the president’s post.

The Umno annual general assembly (PAU 2022) is currently happening at the KL World Trade Centre (WTCKL) until Saturday.

Bernama reported yesterday that 140 division chiefs stated their solidarity for the president’s post, currently held by Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, to not be open for contest in the next party polls expected to take place in May this year.

Speaking on behalf of the 140 at a press conference last night, Wangsa Maju division chief Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Shafie Abdullah said they were also in agreement that the deputy president’s post should not be contested either.

He informed that 126 Umno division chiefs were present at the presser, with 14 being at PAU 2022 in WTCKL. However, he asserted that all 140 were in agreement over the matter.

He said this was because there would be six state elections this year and that a strong Umno is needed for this.

Bernama said the 126 division heads attended a closed door meeting at a hotel prior to the presser.

In an InstaStory post, Khairy shared a poster headlined “126 Ketua Bahagian sokong jawatan presiden dan timbalan presiden tidak dipertandingkan.” (126 division chiefs agree president and deputy president’s posts should not be contested.)

Khairy added his take to the news: “Stop the madness. I think the president is a fighter who is not afraid to face challengers. Open the room for contest. Do not kill the democracy in Umno.”
