UPDATE: Sinar Harian reported that Driftershoots was arrested by the police for climbing Merdeka 118 on 1 May 2022 and charged under Section 457 of the Penal Code on the same day.

Days after a Russian couple gained notoriety for allegedly climbing Merdeka 118, a group of Youtubers from the United States, collectively known as Driftershoots, claimed to have pulled the same stunt.

While the video’s legitimacy is still being debated, netizens are also talking about the security of the still-in-progress building.

In the video, a group of four men documented their journey up to the top spire of Merdeka 118.

They pretended to be construction workers wearing neon safety jackets and crash helmets as they infiltrated the building.

The group also cut through some zip ties that were holding up a mesh net which blocked trespassers from going up the stairs.

Once the zip ties were cut, there was enough room for each of the men to wiggle onto the stairs and carry on their journey.

While climbing up the spire, there were flashes of lightning and thunder around but it didn’t stop them from taking the risk.

Hopefully, we don’t get hit by a lightning.

One of the Youtubers said.

The views they captured of the Kuala Lumpur city skyline were amazing. At the end of the video, the group could be seen celebrating in their hotel room.

The question still remains whether such daredevil feats should be celebrated when no prior permission was obtained from the building management or authorities.

Aside from security issues, it’s a matter of safety for the daredevils themselves.

Curiously, the caption used by the Youtubers sounded similar to the one posted on Ivan Beerkus’s Instagram.

Both captions mentioned the alleged jailing of an individual who attempted to scale high-rise buildings in the country.

The Russian couple who did it in December 2022

Previously on 28 December 2022, a Russian couple, Ivan Beerkus and Angela Nikolau, climbed the Merdeka 118 tower.

Angela Nikolau also posted a recap on Twitter showing how they managed to elude the workers and security in the building.

She posted a video of her sitting at the edge of the tower on her Instagram too.

The couple also sold their pictures atop Merdeka 118 as NFTs for 7.69 ether (ETH).

The authorities have said they didn’t find the couple on the CCTV and there were no records of the couple entering and leaving the country.

Due to this, the Malaysian authorities are still investigating whether the pictures and videos are fake.
