A non-profit organisation Pink Triangle Foundation (PT Foundation) is providing free PrEP starter kits worth RM190 to tertiary education students and B40 individuals in January and February 2023.

PT Foundation together with DB Events managed to raise enough funds last Christmas Eve to sponsor more PrEP Starter Kits and help more people.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medication used to prevent HIV transmission that’s spread through sex or injection drug use.

The items included in the PrEP starter kit are:

  • A month’s supply of PrEP (which includes Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate aka Tenofovir DF, and Emtricitabine).
  • HIV and Syphilis rapid test
  • Hepatitis B lab test
  • Urine full examination microscopy examination (FEME)
  • Doctor consultation
  • Baseline blood screening (which provides results for full blood count, glucose level, cholesterol level, kidney function, and liver function)

To apply, applicants need to DM PT Foundation on Instagram or email the clinic manager of Community Health Care Clinic (CHCC), Ramesh Vadiveloo, at ramesh@ptfmalaysia.org for the application link.

However, do take note the application closes on 15 January 2023. The redemption period runs from 24 January 2023 to 24 February 2023.

What’s the efficacy of PrEP?

PrEP is said to be able to reduce the risk of contracting HIV from sex by about 90% when taken according to prescription.

Although the medication is beneficial for people who are affected, the stigma is still prevalent in Malaysia and there have been criticisms about making the medication available in the country.

Regardless, the Health Ministry (KKM) is carrying out a pilot project in several hospitals in Malaysia to assess its effectiveness and safety in reducing the risk of HIV infection.
