Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said the ministry will continue its independent investigation into the volleyball coach who slapped his teenage players despite the statements put out by the team and a parent of one of the players.

Hannah said it was to prevent similar incidences and to set a precedent for the next generation in sports.

She added that the matter is being looked into together with Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.

Not too long ago, a viral clip showed a volleyball coach slapping two of his players during the recent 2022 Malaysia Youth U-14 Volleyball Championship in Johor which took place from 14 to 16 December.

They were allegedly slapped by the coach because they lost points for the team.

The father of one of the players said he had forgiven the coach and hoped no disciplinary action will be taken against him.

The Melaka Under-14 girls’ volleyball team have also spoken up in defence of their coach and urged netizens to stop vilifying him.

Stop making this issue viral because we love our coach. Let us decide on what is good and bad. We will stand by our coach and our team.

New Straits Times reported that the coach had met the students’ parents to apologise for his actions.

While the Malaysia Volleyball Association (Mava) had decided to suspend the coach from any national volleyball activities until all investigations are completed, the Melaka Sports Council is deciding about the coach’s suspension today (4 January).

Mava announced that it’s establishing an investigative body to look into the incident immediately.

The incident also caught the attention of an international football coach and youth mentor, Mehran Rowshan, who’s based in Dubai.

Mehran said the lack of reaction from the girls who were slapped and the adults around them showed that it was a normal occurrence and thus, it was disappointing and worrying.
