The president of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), Tan Sri Dr Mohamad Norza Zakaria, released a statement to rebuff the corruption allegation made by the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Adam Adli Abd Halim.

Adam Adli previously mentioned that the sports fraternity in Malaysia was plagued by elements of corruption at the first press conference after officially reporting for duty at the Youth and Sports Ministry building yesterday (12 December).

Norza Zakaria said Adam’s statement was uncalled for and unfair for painting various national sports bodies with the same brush.

As the umbrella body of 57 national sports associations (NSAs), the OCM is deeply disappointed with Adam Adli’s statement, which was not fully justified and not backed by evidence.

He added that Adam should have spoken with the stakeholders before coming up with a blanket statement, which reflected his poor understanding of the existing structure.

Norza also said a number of National Sports Associations (NSAs) have been recognized as model associations that observed best practices of good governance.

These NSAs have also produced world-beaters in sports such as badminton, cycling, diving, tenpin bowling, and silat.

In the same statement, the Deputy President of OCM, who’s also the president of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), Datuk Haji Hamidin Haji Mohd Amin, echoed a similar sentiment.

The Vice President of OCM, who’s also the President of the Wushu Federation of Malaysia (WFM), Dato Chong Kim Fatt, described Adam’s statement as populist in nature and set to antagonise NSAs.

The statement does not benefit anybody. It only serves to antagonise the NSAs, which are supposedly the biggest stakeholders in the sporting fraternity. It is not fair for those who have worked hard and toiled night and day to bring success to their respective sports.

Unfortunately, the ‘knee-jerk’ reaction has put the organization under scrutiny from wary netizens.

Netizens said the press statement from OCM was unnecessary because Adam Adli didn’t mention any sports bodies by name.

Most felt that the defensive reaction was telling while some called for an investigation into the sports bodies.

One of them thinks the sports bodies should welcome the investigation to establish and uphold a corrupt-free practice.
