Women have always dealt with sexism in many forms and even more so when they’re leaders in a public setting.

The women candidates in this year’s 15th general election (GE15) have received dismissive comments regarding their appearances. Among the things they have to contend with are lewd comments and harassment online.

The latest person to disparage women candidates was PAS central election director Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor during a campaign speech he made in Kuala Jeneri in Sik, Kedah.

In the video that has gone viral, Sanusi claimed that he wasn’t looking down on Muslim women but pointed out why it may be difficult for them.

He said women candidates couldn’t handle issues and complaints from constituents at any time of the day. While he said all those sexist things, the attendees laughed as if agreeing with him.

I don’t mean to look down on muslimat (women) but when you have constituents calling you at all hours of the day – in the day, at night, in the early hours of the morning – with all sorts of problems, can women handle this? At 3am? We can only imagine women getting up at that hour with their hair all over the place.

Netizens have called him out for his sexist comments and called him a misogynist.

They refuted his claims and said women get up at all hours of the night to feed their babies, change diapers, and even care for their loved ones who are ill.

A few netizens also pointed out how the floods did not stop Nurul Izzah, Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat, from visiting flood victims in the constituency.

Some Kedahans said they were embarrassed and ashamed by Sanusi’s inappropriate comments and urged people to vote for the right leader and party.

The netizens also said it’s hypocritical of Sanusi to say such things because PAS has put women candidates to contest in GE15.
