Incumbent Klang MP Charles Santiago has been told that he would not be defending his seat in the 15th General Election since 2018, DAP national deputy chairman Gobind Singh Deo told The Star.

Gobind, who is also the Selangor DAP chairman, said that the matter was also discussed between the two last week before DAP officially announced that Santiago will be dropped by the party for GE15.

He added that, in fact, there had been calls for the three-term Klang lawmaker to be dropped by the party since 2013.

“My position remains. Santiago met me in 2013 and 2018 for support for his candidature in Klang.

“It was clear then that there were calls for him to be replaced. I supported him nevertheless and he was given the opportunity to carry on.

“In 2018, I did tell him that it would be difficult to carry on after that and that 2018 would be the last.

“I acknowledge and appreciate the fact that Charles has been magnanimous but to say this is an afterthought isn’t correct,” Gobind was quoted as saying.

Gobind was commenting on Santiago’s tweet where the latter claimed that the narrative that he was always going to be replaced in Klang was “an afterthought” upon public backlash over him being dropped from defending Klang in GE15.

He however said that the move to drop Santiago was not an easy decision to make but it was ultimately the party’s decision.

Santiago was the Klang MP since 2008. DAP has named Selangor state executive councillor V. Ganabatirau as Santiago’s replacement for GE15.
