As soon as the date for the 15th general election (GE15) was announced, many Malaysians complained that the price of flight tickets increased exponentially.

The expensive flight tickets will make it tough for citizens who want to fly home to vote in the upcoming elections.

Fortunately, there are always kind people who will try to find a way to help those who need it.

Free Malaysia Today reported that a church in Sarawak had raised RM30,000 to sponsor flights for students from public and private universities and colleges to return to East Malaysia to vote in GE15.

As it happens, it’s not the first time that the Methodist Church in Malaysia Sarawak Chinese Annual Conference has helped students fly home to cast their ballots. They have helped 600 students to fly home to vote in the previous election, GE14.

Its spokesperson Nicholas Tan said more than 1,000 students had applied through the “Jom Balik Mengundi 2.0” campaign so far. He added that the number of applications was greater this time around due to Undi18.

Under Undi18, all Malaysians aged 18 and above are automatically registered as voters with their constituency based on their MyKad address details since last December and are eligible to vote.

The Jom Balik Mengundi 2.0 initiative is also open to students in Sabah and Sarawak who wish to return to the peninsula to cast their ballots. It’s open to all tertiary students, regardless of race or religion.

Tan said the priority is given to students who are unable to afford flight tickets. Due to limited funds, the applications would be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.

He also invited more Malaysians to come forward to help but noted that donations from political parties aren’t welcome.

At the moment, they have received over 1,000 responses and had to close the application form due to limited funds. They might reconsider reopening the application once they have more donations.

Those who want to help fly these students home can do so via a bank transfer to the Miri District Conference of Methodist Church’s Hong Leong Bank account 25500017529.

The proof of transactions can be sent to 013-2582833.
