Pakatan Harapan (PH) prime minister candidate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that he would contest the Tambun parliamentary seat in Perak in the upcoming 15th General Election (GE15).

The Opposition leader and PKR president announced this at a PH convention in Ipoh last night.

The former Port Dickson MP said that he took a page out of Lim Kit Siang’s book, another PH stalwart, when he decided to switch to Perak for the next GE.

“I don’t want to contest a seat in which I can win with a large majority.

“I’m the (opposition) leader. I’m brave and I’m prepared to contest in Tambun in this election,” Free Malaysia Today quoted Anwar.

Before switching to Port Dickson, Anwar was a five-term Permatang Pauh MP between 1982 to 2015.

Anwar had previously stated that he would contest in a seat that was being held by PH “traitors”, referring to a host of MPs that leave the coalition en masse during the infamous ‘Sheraton Move’,  in order to send a message to these party hoppers.

The Tambun parliamentary seat was last won by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

The former Perak menteri besar, who is also part of the current Cabinet line-up won the seat in the last general election in 2018 under a PH ticket, when Bersatu was still part of PH.

In the 2018 election, Ahmad Faizal won the Tambun seat with a majority of 5,320 votes.
