Ex inspector-general of police (IGP) Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador and former chief executive officer of the national film corporation (FINAS) Ahmad Idham Ahmad Nadzri has been earmarked as potential candidates for Dr Mahathir Mohamad-led Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) in Negeri Sembilan.

According to Negeri Sembilan GTA deputy chairman Mohamad Jani Ismail, the retired top cop has been shortlisted to contest in Rembau, where he potentially faces UMNO no. 2 Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, who has shown firm interest in contesting the seat.

For Ahmad Idham, the actor and director is being considered for the Port Dickson parliamentary seat, last won by Opposition chief Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“Both names are in the shortlist of candidates which I have presented to the leadership,” Mohamad Jani was quoted as saying by Berita Harian quoted him as saying.

He added the yet-to-be-registered coalition needed to field ‘heavyweights’ like the duo to put up a strong fight for the two parliamentary seats.

GTA, which was formed on 4 August, is a loose coalition comprising Malay-based political parties, NGOs, academics and professionals.

The alliance has recently announced an ambitious target of contesting 120 parliamentary seats in the Peninsula in the upcoming general election.

GTA comprise of Parti Pejuang Negara (Pejuang), Berjasa, Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra) and the National Indian Muslim Alliance Party (Iman).

GTA also said that their candidates will contest the GE15 under Pejuang’s banner – except in Kelantan where they will be using Putra’s logo –  as the coalition registration is still in process.
