A heroin lab that can cater to 24,197 addicts was uncovered by the police following the arrest of a husband and wife in Penang last Tuesday.

According to New Straits Times, the 43-year-old local man and his 30-year-old foreign wife were detained by the police while they were riding on a motorcycle in Gelugor at about 8.30pm, together with 1,810gm of heroin, worth RM24,250.

The arrest led to the uncovering of the lab which the duo operated on their rented kampong house in Kampung Bukit in Bayan Lepas.

Another 2,720gm of heroin worth RM36,500, Yaba pills (309.54gm) worth RM15,480 and caffeine powder (14,880gm) worth RM5,100 were found at the makeshift heroin lab.

The police also seized several pieces of equipment and chemicals used to process the heroin and a car, bringing the total seizure to RM108,330.

“We are still investigating where they learned to cook the heroin and whether they obtained the formula from another syndicate.

“We are also probing where they had obtained the raw materials to process the heroin.

“What we know is that they have added Yaba pills to make the heroin stronger (more kick),” Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong was quoted as saying.

Soffian said that based on preliminary investigation, the couple is believed to have been actively processing the heroin themselves since January this year before selling them to the local market.

He added that the male suspect’s urine test came back positive for drugs and he also possessed previous drug-related records.

Both suspects are under remand for six days until 17 October and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.
