Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had denied that he would be sacked from UMNO if he refused to dissolve the Parliament soon to pave way for an early general election.

According to Malay Mail, Ismail had described the Saturday meeting at UMNO headquarters as friendly despite the apparent jibes and jeers from UMNO grassroots towards him during the party’s special briefing last weekend.

“No such thing,” replied Ismail when asked by reporters whether his vice-presidency and membership is under threat.

He also appeared to downplay any possible rift between himself and the party’s top leadership, adding that it is normal for party leaders to have different opinions which should be celebrated.

“Our discussion in the supreme council meeting was friendly. No issue. Sometimes, outsiders see differently,” he said.

Ismail was met by reporters after addressing civil servants at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre today.

Dewan Merdeka of the World Trade Centre, where the headquarters of UMNO is located, was filled with chants of “bubar” (dissolve) last Saturday during UMNO special briefing with its president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid said that the party unanimously made the call, adding that UMNO’s supreme council member had also given Ismail, one of the three party’s veep, a guideline of when the general election should be held following the outbreak of Covid-19.

Ismail was absent during the special briefing as he was officiating another event in Pahang that Saturday.

The Bera MP has yet to clearly indicate when he would dissolve the Parliament but has hinted in June that the 15th general election may be called in “a year’s time”.
