The Court of Appeal had set 13 October as the new date for clerk Sam Ke Ting’s appeal against her conviction and sentence for reckless driving that caused the death of eight teens on ‘basikal lajak’ in Johor Bahru back in 2017.

According to Harian Metro, Sam’s lawyer Harvinderjit Singh said the new date was set as the High Court grounds of judgment are still not ready.

On 28 October 2018, Sam was freed by the Johor Baru Magistrate’s Court for reckless driving and causing the death of the teenagers at Jalan Jalan Lingkaran Dalam, Johor Bahru, Johor, at 3.20am on Feb 18, 2017.

The eight teenagers that were killed in the fatal accident were Mohamad Azrie Danish Zulkefli, 14; Muhamad Shahrul Izzwan Azzuraimie, 14; Muhammad Firdauz Danish Mohd Azhar, 16; Fauzan Halmijan, 13; Mohamad Azhar Amir, 16; Muhammad Harith Iskandar Abdullah, 14; Muhammad Shahrul Nizam Marudin, 14 and Haizad Kasrin, 16.

However, in 2019, High Court judge Shahnaz Sulaiman allowed the prosecution’s appeal and remitted the case back to the Magistrate’s Court.

Sam was subsequently ordered to enter her defence on the reckless driving charge.

Magistrate Siti Hajar Ali, who heard the case in 2019, also discharged and acquitted Sam but the prosecution went on to file a second appeal to the High Court.

The case went on trial and on 13 April this year, High Court judge Abu Bakar Katar convicted Sam and sentenced her to six years in jail and an RM6,000 fine. The court also ordered Sam to serve another six months in prison if she failed to pay the fine.

On 18 April, Sam filed for an appeal at the Court of Appeal against her conviction and sentence.

She was also granted a stay of execution of her sentence and was released on bail of RM10,000 with one surety pending the hearing of her appeal.
