A trailer transporting sardine cans overturned at KM265.9 of the North-South Expressway (southbound) around 1pm today.

The spilt contents from the sardine cans flooded the road red and caused traffic congestion that stretched as far as five kilometres.

Kuala Kangsar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Omar Bakhtiar said thousands of sardine cans were scattered along the stretch of the road.

The affected road was closed and road users from the north were diverted out to the Kuala Kangsar Toll Plaza for cleaning work to be carried out.

All vehicles were directed to use an alternative route from the Kuala Kangsar Toll to Sungai Siput to get to Ipoh.

On Twitter, @Plustrafik said the contra route has been opened at KM267.0 to 265.1 in the north direction to reduce congestion.

According to NST, policemen were also stationed at the scene to help manage traffic flow and prevent further congestion.
