A lorry driver, who was paid RM1000 for his troubles to ferry 2.2 tonnes of ketum leaves from Baling, Kedah to Kelantan, was arrested by the police on Tuesday at a roadblock at Batu 6, East–West Highway near Batu Melintang Jeli.
According to Utusan Malaysia, Acting Kelantan Police Chief, Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun said that the police found the ketum leaves packed in black plastic bags which were concealed using canvas and boxes.
It was also learned that this is not the first time the suspect had smuggled the ketum leaves into the state.
“Preliminary investigation found that this is the second time the suspect took money to bring ketum leaves to this state, but this time, he failed.
“Checks found that the suspect has no prior criminal record and he also tested negative for drugs,” he told a press conference at the Kelantan Police Contingent Headquarters yesterday.
In a related matter, Muhamad Zaki said that the 7th Battalion of the General Operations Force (GOF7) had seized 900,000 illicit white cigarettes after stopping a car in Pasir Pekan, Tumpat.
He said an inspection on a Perodua Kenari led to the discovery of cigarettes including tax amounting to RM688,050.
