It was a day to remember for Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun after they sprung a surprise by defeating Olympic champions Lee Yang-Wang Chi-lin in the Taiwan Open men’s doubles final yesterday.
The world No 36 Malaysian took 54 minutes to win the final against the Taiwanese world No 4 in their own backyard, reported New Straits Times.
Wei Chong-Kai Wun took the first set 21-18 before squandering the second set 11-21. However, the pair displayed nerves of steel in the rubber set to win 21-18.
Yesterday’s match was the first meeting between the two pairs.
To make it even sweeter, yesterday’s win was the second title of the year for the duo, who has been struggling with injuries in recent times.
The last title that they won together was the Syed Modi International in January.
Prior to the final game yesterday, BAM coaching director Rexy Mainaky had the pair to play “as if they had nothing to lose” in the final.
The advice clearly works as the national men’s pair won again a much higher ranking pair in a final played in front of their home fans.
Rexy had also urged Wei Chong-Kai Wun to catch up with their more established seniors in the form of Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani.
“I am very happy for Wei Chong-Kai Wun,”
“I just want Wei Chong-Kai Wun to build on this win and stay consistent,” Rexy was quoted as saying.
Wei Chong-Kai Wun’s next assignment is the Japan Open on 30 August – 4 September.
Meanwhile, for Lee Yang-Wang Chi-lin, their wait for a title since winning gold in the Olympics last year continues.
