A food delivery rider was fined RM50,000 by the Sepang Sessions Court after he pleaded guilty to uploading a video insulting Islam on his YouTube channel last week, Harian Metro reported.
Judge Ahmad Rizki Abdul Jalil also ordered Mohd Nor’ Muzil Mohd Razalli, 39, to be sent to six months in prison if he failed to settle the imposed fine.
According to the report, the accused failed to settle the fine.
In handing down the sentence, Judge Ahmad Rizki said the accused had committed a serious offence.
“As Muslims, the accused should repent for his mistakes and what he did.
“The offence is serious as it involves religious sensitivities and threatens the harmony of society in Malaysia and the video is available worldwide,” he said.
The accused had committed the act on 16 July, and was charged under Section 233 (1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which is punishable under Section 233(3) of the same Act.
The Act provides a maximum fine of RM50,000 or an imprisonment term for up to one year or both.
The prosecution was conducted by the Deputy Public Prosecutor, Noor Azizah Aling while the accused was not represented.
Noor Azizah urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence as the accused had incited the public’s anger and if ignored could threaten the country’s peace.
“The public took this issue seriously and more than 20 police reports were lodged across the country,” he said.
Prior to his arrest last Sunday, the accused, who lived in Bukit Kuchai, Puchong, was believed to have been assaulted by several individuals who went and tracked him to his home after the video that he uploaded, went viral on social media.
The incident also left him with a bloodied face.
