Malaysian screenwriter Adele Lim, who worked on scripts for films such as “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Raya and The Last Dragon,” has been invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Lim announced her excitement on her official Twitter account and said that American movies are in her DNA despite growing up in Malaysia.

Movies are a beacon for all the batty dreamers all over the world. And I am so lucky to be a tiny part of it.

The other invitees to the Academy

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Academy has invited 397 members of the global film community to join the organization.

Previously, the Academy has been criticised for being too white (#OscarsSoWhite) and it has since sought to change that perception with its new invitees.

Membership is extended to those who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures.

Based on the Academy-provided breakdown of the new invitees, 44% are women, 37% are non-white and 50% are non-Americans (54 different countries are represented).

Making up the list are 71 Oscar nominees, including 15 winners. Four individuals have also been invited to join the Academy by multiple branches and they must select only one branch upon accepting membership.

The four individuals and the branches they’re invited to are:

  • Pawo Choyning Dorji – Director, Writer
  • Ryusuke Hamaguchi – Director, Writer
  • Sian Harries Heder – Director, Writer
  • Jonas Poher Rasmussen – Director, Documentary

The other notable names invited to join the Academy this year include 2021 standout actors such as Jamie Dornan (Belfast), Robin de Jesus (Tick, Tick… Boom!) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Northman, Last Night in Soho).

If all the new invitees accept the invitation, the Academy’s overall membership will total up to 34% female, 19% non-white and 23% non-American.

The full list of names invited can be accessed at the Academy’s official website.
