Sandakan is expected to be upgraded to a city between August and October this year, said Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.

He said that due to certain constraints, the plan to upgrade Sandakan into a city which was scheduled for earlier this year had to be postponed.

“Now, Sandakan is ready. The Sandakan Municipal Council said that they are ready for Sandakan’s status to be elevated to a city. Of course, this would improve Sandakan’s economy and of course, there will be new plans that will be implemented,” Bung Mokhtar was quoted by Sinar Harian.

According to Bung Moktar, among the plans to boost Sandakan’s economy is to improve the tourism aspect and also boost the participation of small-sized entrepreneurs.

“For example, maybe we will build a waterfront like the one in Kota Kinabalu which will definitely attract tourists,” he added.

Meanwhile, commenting on the weekend’s youth carnival, Bung Mokhtar said that was in line with BN’s mission to get closer to the people and provide opportunities for the community, especially youths, to do business and to showcase their talents in sports and recreational activities.
