The Mexican amphibian axolotls have become popular pets among Thai youths through the game Minecraft.

The animal is also popular among the younger demographic due to its cute look and colourful shades.

Unfortunately, the popularity of the coloured axolotls has irresponsible parties colouring these animals in unnatural colours which cause harm to them.

Irresponsible sellers change the animal’s original colours by injecting chemicals into the skin of axolotls.

An axolotl breeder group Axolotl Ville TH said these dangerous chemicals will kill axolotls in a week. For comparison, axolotls have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, and cutting their long lifespan to about 7 days is especially cruel.

According to The Thaiger, axolotls in various colours have popped up for sale in markets such as Chatuchak in Bangkok.

This trend is not good for the species, classified as “critically endangered” on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It’s estimated that there is only 50 to 1,000 axolotl left in the wild.
