The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) had to demolish the extension built by an owner of the UTM Flat in Ampang recently as it went against the Strata Titles Act 1985.

According to the local council, the additional structure that was built by the homeowner contradicts sections 133 and 757 of the act.

MPAJ, in a statement via Facebook today, stated that the homeowner had built the extension to their home on the flat’s common property space.

“Stratified homes such as flats, apartments and condominiums are bound by Act 757 where parcel lots are only limited to the area of the parcel purchased,” the statement reads.

MPAJ also said that homeowners must also take into consideration the safety of other residents when renovating their homes.

“The issue of the safety of the surrounding residents must also be taken into account if the addition of the house will disrupt the rescue work by the responsible party in the event of any disaster such as fire and so on.”

A picture of the demolition work had recently gone viral on social media. According to MPAJ, the operation was conducted on 25 May.

Commenting on the issue, several netizens said that it serves the homeowner’s right for an inconsiderate move on his part.

There are also others who suggest for the homeowner to sell the flat and buy another home since it seems like he is capable of it.
