The Health Ministry (KKM) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Straumann Group Sdn Bhd to provide dental implant treatment benefits to the B40 group.

Straumann Group, a global leader in implantology and esthetic dentistry, would provide 3,000 packages of complete dental implant treatment that are worth over RM10 million to those in need.

In the Health Ministry, this treatment is performed by Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialist, Periodontist Specialist and Restorative Specialist. The ministry hopes that this collaboration will increase access to dental implant services and further pave the way for the delivery of comprehensive dental health services to Malaysian families.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin

Based on the National Oral Health Survey for Adults in 2010, one in four adults in Malaysia uses a dental prosthesis due to tooth loss.

45.9% of those still with teeth need a prosthesis to replace a missing tooth while one in three toothless adults also need a prosthesis.

Dental implants are replacement treatments made from biochemical materials such as titanium and help to restore the main functions of the mouth.

There won’t be any side effects on the patient’s body and bones while it can stick directly to the titanium surface.

These implants will not interfere with nearby teeth and are easier to clean as compared to other fixed prostheses.

According to New Straits Times, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said only cases that meet the criteria can be given this dental implant treatment.

The treatment would need to be monitored closely because studies showed that 19 to 65% of patients who receive dental implant treatment get mucositis, while 1 to 47% get inflammatory diseases (peri-implantitis) if they fail to be monitored regularly.

In order to ensure the success of the dental implant programme so that it would not lead to any complication, close and continued monitoring by the MOH and commitment from the patients to attend follow-up checkups, are very important.
