A local university student Arep (@ArepAshari) was disappointed at Universiti Malaya management’s lack of action on Twitter about the faulty fan in his sister’s dorm room.

Arep said the faulty fan had been reported twice, but the management didn’t do anything about it. It didn’t take long before the fan above the bed actually caught on fire.

Fortunately, the firefighters managed to put out the flames in time before the fire could do any extensive damage to the room. No one was hurt.

Arep asked whether the university was waiting for a student to perish in the fire before taking any action.

The university will cover the cost

In an update, Arep said the maintenance had fixed the fan and his sister was given another room. The university is also covering the cost and will refund the sister.

Arep said he was thankful that the matter has been settled.

Netizens were sad that students paid so much money to the university but still had to advocate for themselves.

Others brought up their similar experiences in other universities and shared the dire conditions of their accommodations. They also complained of the heat in their dorms.
