Bukit Aman today clarified that the men in blue will continue to enforce the obligation to wear face masks.

According to the Bukit Aman management director Datuk Zaini Jass, the police had retracted an April 20 circular stating that fines would no longer be issued to those who are found not to wear face masks in public.

Zaini said that there was a “technical error” and that the circular had been immediately retracted as soon as they realised the mistake.

“It’s not true. It’s still the status quo. We are still continuing to enforce non-compliance with SOP Covid-19,” Zaini was quoted by Malaysiakini.

“The letter has been withdrawn,” he added.

Zaini was commenting on the police circular, dated 20 April, ordering all police to stop issuing compounds against those caught not wearing face masks which had made its rounds on social media.

According to the leaked document, the police instead only had to advise the offenders to wear face masks.
