Two Malaysians, Lim Chee Kong and Lim Chee Wei, were among 10 people who were given the Public Spirited Awards by Singapore Police for helping to fend off a man who was armed with a cleaver. Their brave act managed to save a woman’s life on 14 April.

55-year-old Chee Kong, a restaurant chef, had stepped out for a smoke break when he heard a woman screaming for help.

He immediately ran up to the pair while shouting at the armed suspect to stop. He was shocked to see the suspect slashing at the woman in the back alley of Liang Seah Street.

But then (he came towards me) like he was going to harm me, so I retreated and kept shouting.

Chee Wei, a worker from another restaurant nearby, came to help after hearing the commotion. Together, they started throwing random items such as rubbish bins, chairs and signboards at the suspect to keep him at a distance.

According to Free Malaysia Today, two air-conditioning workers grabbed ladders from their lorry to force the suspect to back off too.

A waitress at a steamboat restaurant nearby, To Lee Kwee, sought help from employees of a hotel nearby and called the police.

Commander of the central police division Jeremy Ang commended the two men for their bravery and quick thinking although they were fully aware that the man was armed.

The 46-year-old suspect Cheng Guoyan was charged on Saturday with attempted murder of the woman.
