The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) Selangor seized over 28 tonnes of frozen buffalo meat from India at Port Klang, last Monday.
The frozen buffalo meat, which arrived on 7 March, was confiscated following a routine inspection by MAQIS enforcement officers at 10am.
“Investigations found that a container carrying frozen buffalo meat did not adhere to the valid import permit conditions. The importer failed to display the halal logo on the product’s boxes as per the requirement stated in the import permit.
“As a result, all 1,120 cartons of frozen buffalo meat estimated to be worth RM322,565.88 was confiscated for further investigation,” Maqis Selangor said in a statement.
The statement further reads that failure to comply with the permit conditions was an offence under Section 15 (1) of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011, which carries a fine of not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding six years or both, if convicted.
The department also added that it will continue to monitor and inspect every agricultural product entering the country at all entry points.
“This is to ensure that plants, animals, carcasses, fish, agricultural products and microorganisms imported into the country are free from the threat of pests, diseases and contaminations while complying with the conditions and regulations set.”
