UMNO President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today join the call for Parliament to be dissolved, paving way for an earlier 15th General Election.

Despite noting that it is the prime minister’s prerogative to advise and to seek approval from Yang di-Pertuan Agong to dissolve the Parliament, Zahid however said that UMNO has the right to decide its own direction.

“The party does not want to interfere with such matters. However, Umno is a responsible party, we have the power (right) to determine the direction of our own party,” he was quoted as saying by New Straits Times.

He was addressing the UMNO delegates at the party’s 2021 general assembly this morning.

In making the call for an early election, Zahid said that the sentiments among rakyat are favourable towards the party.

He pointed towards UMNO-led Barisan Nasional (BN) back-to-back state election victories in Melaka and Johor as evidence.

“The ‘mood’ (sentiments) on the ground is in our favour, so what are we waiting for?” he said.

BN reclaimed Melaka and Johor back from Pakatan Harapan with a two-thirds majority win in both state elections.

PAS and PH however had stated that they will not hold elections in their controlled states simultaneously should GE-15 is to be called anytime soon.
